Odisha government on Tuesday ordered ban on the use of plastic bags and polythene, to start from October 2 on the fateful day of the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
Chief Minister of the state, Naveen Patnaik announced to ban plastic while discussing about environmental awareness.
To make the ban effective and control pollution caused due to plastic, three departments of the state government are tasked with responsibities.
The Chief Minister said that the use of plastic has posed a threat to the environment, the health of children and the future of human race.
The ban will come into force from October two in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Berhampur, Sambalpur, Puri, Rourkela and the entire state over the next two years.
The ban will be enforced in the Municipal Corporations, urban local bodies and in rural areas of the state.
