The much-awaited proposed inauguration of Gurupriya Setu bridge over Janbai river misses another deadline on the row. It establishes a link between the downtime regions of Chitrakonda block and Malkangiri district headquarters. Investiture ceremony of the bridge would soon take place sometime after July 20.
The inauguration was delayed on account of heavy rain triggerd by low pressure over the Bay of Bengal as predicted by Met department. Rivers in southern parts of Odisha are already in deluge owing to incessant rains since last Saturday. Odisha Disaster Management Department has put the District Collectors on the lookout for this matter. District information and public relations officer, Manas Kumar Mishra, said that the programme would be fixed when the weather condition will show signs of improvement.
Foundation stone of the bridge had been laid down earlier by former Chief Minister of Odisha, Janaki Ballabh Patnaik, in 1982. The 910-metre long bridge is expected to solve all problems of communication for approximately 30,000 people of 150 villages in the cut-off area in and around Kalimela and Chitrakonda repositories.
Intelligence sources noted that those opposing the project are aiming to trigger violence ahead of the launch. Due to this, police have tightened the security arrangements. BSF jawans are patrolling the site round the clock. Numerous high-resolution CCTV cameras have been installed for rendering flawless vigilance and protection to the bridge.
