Finally the much awaited good news for the daily comuters of the city buses is here. The Bhubaneswar Puri Transport Services Limited (BPTSL) is mulling over to make the city buses run between Bhubaneswar-Cuttack-Puri GPS-enabled.
In a pilot project, GPS system will be installed in 100 Dream Team Sahara (DTS) run city buses. This initial phase of the project will be completed by April-MAy of this year as per sources. The service would be available at 55 bus bays and 300 bus stops designated for city buses in the Capital and outside.
At present, 185 city buses run daily between Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri and Khurda while 300 more were under planning to be added to the fleet.
What is GPS system ? How will this system benefit our city buses ?
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite based radio-navigation system. Here multiple number of Satellites( at least 24 in number ) revolve around the Earth twice a day in a precise orbit. Each satellite transmits a unique signal to the earth where GPS signal receiving devices decode and compute the precise location of the satellite. GPS receivers use this information to calculate a user or object’s exact location.
Essentially, the GPS receiver measures the distance to each satellite by the amount of time it takes to receive a transmitted signal. With distance measurements from a few more satellites, the receiver can determine a user’s position and display it electronically.
The GPS system in the buses will allow the buses to show and announce the upcoming bus stoppages to passengers during the travel. It will also be easy to plan the routes, and divert them in case of any heavy traffic. It will lead to better scheduling of the buses and their timely running. So at the end of the day you will have more number of trips, better fuel management and save money which can be used to better the service.
